August 15, 2012 – Tonight’s #RealRevision chat was inspired by the #TeachersWrite Virtual Summer Writing Camp but grew to include many more writers, teachers, and author/illustrators. Thanks to all who took the time to share revision ideas with us tonight – and if you’re still looking for more strategies, please check out my book REAL REVISION: AUTHORS’ STRATEGIES TO SHARE WITH STUDENT WRITERS, which includes interviews with more than forty authors about their favorite revision strategies, tips, and tricks!

@KateMessner: Author friends…Do you love revision or despise it? What are your favorite strategies, tips, & tricks? #RealRevision |
@KrisBisBooks: Empowering kids to see what their writing can be… That is the biggest hurdle that I foresee for my students. #RealRevision |
@LynneKelly: RT @KateMessner Time for #RealRevisionchat, inspired by our #TeachersWrite group & open to everyone.What do you wish you knew abt revision? |
@KateMessner: I find it’s helpful to divide revision jobs categories – “big picture” issues (timelines, arcs, themes) & sentence level work. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @KrisBisBooks Starting kids off w/super-fast 1st draft sets up for revision. Showing changes in YOUR drafts is powerful, too. #RealRevision |
@LynneKelly: @KateMessner I like revising, ’cause the story’s written! Helps me to put indiv revision tasks on notecards–easier to tackle. #realrevision |
@ixtumea: RT @LynneKelly: RT @KateMessner Time for #RealRevisionchat, inspired by our #TeachersWrite group & open to everyone.What do you wish you knew abt revision? |
@colbysharp: #realrevisionteaching revision stresses me out. Excited to follow the chat. |
@Jodi_Carmichael: Starting a #RealRevisionon my YA & afraid I’m losing the uniqueness of the original MS, while sticking with editor’s suggestions. |
@KateMessner: @LynneKelly Love the notecard idea – My revision to-do list is usually a long one – on really big paper! #RealRevision |
@debralynnlazar: @KateMessner For the most part, I like it. Reading out loud is my biggest tip, especially on final revisions. #RealRevision |
@giamateau: I love revising, especially in winter! #realrevisionPrint a copy, build a fire, sit in the cozy chair. Observe where boredom sets in. |
@ixtumea: RT @KateMessner: Author friends…Do you love revision or despise it? What are your favorite strategies, tips, & tricks? #RealRevision |
@marcieaf: @KateMessner do you have suggestions for untangling yourself from plot threads? I think I’ve revised myself into a mess. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: @Jodi_Carmichael Editor’s suggestions may tell you that part of story needs work – you can find ways to address in your voice. #RealRevision |
@rj_anderson: Compared to the 1st draft, I love revision. Though at times I worry that I’m only making the book different, not better. #realrevision |
@mimicross: #RealRevisionis a chance to get it right, with a safety net underneath this time, i.e., your first draft—or your 10th! |
@MojoFingers: #RealRevisionI have trouble getting my sixth graders out of the editing for conventions mindset and into actual revision. Any ideas? |
@KateMessner: @marcieaf I make big timelines w/ different levels for each plot thread. Makes it easier to untangle. #RealRevision |
@KrisBisBooks: @colbysharp It stresses kids out, too- so important to break down the process into big chunks- rock tumbling pg. 11 #RealRevision |
@gaepol: RT @colbysharp: #realrevisionteaching revision stresses me out. Excited to follow the chat. |
@AStarowicz: #RealRevisionI don’t want to sound like a teacher’s pet-but I LOVE this book-it is so easy to access the activities into classroom writing |
@KateMessner: @MojoFingers Teaching real revision (vs. editing) explicitly early in year helps with this. So does defining revision tasks. #RealRevision |
@JoanneLevy: @KateMessner Revision categories – I do this too. Start with big stuff and then get smaller until it’s line edit stuff. #RealRevision |
@thereadingzone: Popping in to tell @katemessner that I shared your Real Revision gallery with my book campers today and they were in awe! #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @JoanneLevy Not revision-related…but I saw your book at Barnes & Noble in Vermont this afternoon. I waved to it. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: I find this really effective, too. RT @marcieaf: I only get my students to focus on one thing at a time for each revision. #RealRevision |
@Nightlin: @KateMessner I love revision, but it can be a daunting task. I get temporarily stressed over losing an idea due to superfluity. #RealRevision |
@mimicross: @debralynnlazar Ha! Me too! #singersongwriter #RealRevisionDo vomit draft to music, & the read aloud thing MUCH later 🙂 |
@SaundraMitchell: .@KateMessner I like to go in passes. Fix all the little things. Fix the medium things. Fix the MONSTER things. #realrevision |
@ixtumea: I’m starting to like revisions. Shock, huh? #realrevision |
@KrisBisBooks: I really like color-coding (pg. 74) for big picture revision. #RealRevision |
@SaundraMitchell: .@KateMessner That way,I feel like I’m accomplishing something from the very first day. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: Editing=fixing mistakes re: spelling, punctuation, etc. Revision= re-imagining (characters, plot, pacing, word choice…) #RealRevision |
@JoanneLevy: @KateMessner by the way, to your earlier question, I’m not a fan of revising – I find the real joy of writing in drafting. #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: I use sticky notes and map out my story. Been moving those sticky pads around more. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: @SaundraMitchell So do you fix little issues first? I do the opposite – don’t worry about details until the skeleton is solid. #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: @SaundraMitchell I wish I did though I’m finding it’s okay not to beat yourself up if it’s not perfect after a few rounds. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @KrisBisBooks I love color-coding for my own work as well as teaching. I need to buy stock in an office supply store. #RealRevision |
@Jess_Keating: @KateMessner I love switching fonts to help refresh my eyes and pick up on phrasings I’ve missed before.. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: @MelanieMeehan1 I write my first drafts like I’m being pursued by a speeding train. When I finish, I relax & start revising. #RealRevision |
@LynneKelly: @ixtumea I use sticky notes mostly for plotting, but they can show where something’s missing in the storyline. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: @Jess_Keating Have never tried switching fonts for a new revision pass, but that’s a great idea! Seeing in a new way… #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: @LynneKelly I need to get the cards. I have a huge whiteboard upstairs in my writing loft filled with notes. #realrevision |
@mardieteach: @KateMessner That was one big piece of the learning for me in reading your book. First draft =FAST! #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: With my latest project I found that a name change helped tons. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: RT @Gwenda I do that too. Once I have a draft can step back and see BIG changes. Fine-tuning generally comes last. #RealRevision |
@Jess_Keating: @JoanneLevy It really makes a huge difference for me. I try to switch every time I do another go 🙂 #realrevision |
@marcieaf: #realrevisionI send it to my kindle and then see what parts don’t read like a real book. |
@RebeccaLSutton: RT @KateMessner: Tonight at 9 EST – #RealRevisionchat for #TeachersWrite & anyone who wants to talk about revision strategies for writers! |
@KateMessner: @mardieteach It doesn’t work for everyone. Some writers do a page or two a day & revise before writing the next part. #RealRevision |
@Loriprima: @KateMessner printing my MS out lets me “see” things I miss on the screen. Also take 1-2 week break for a clear mind #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: Also not to take every suggestion if it takes away from your overall vision of your story. #realrevision |
@mimicross: What a great idea! RT @marcieaf “I send it to my kindle and then see what parts don’t read like a real book.” #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @MelanieMeehan1 Speeding trains are great incentive. If I’m drafting, I’ll usually do between 2000-5000 words/day. #RealRevision |
@mardieteach: @KateMessner Good to know. But I think I revise too much when I’m writing a first draft – stops me from writing. #RealRevision |
@MojoFingers: #RealRevision @KateMessnerRevision = Re-imagining. What an apt description. Maybe this is the point I should be driving home w/ my students |
@AStarowicz: #RealRevisionCreated a rolling revision cart that I take with us everywhere we go – library, computer lab, cafeteria, or another classroom |
@KateMessner: @Jess_Keating Also amazing: How one tiny change in a manuscript requires many tentacles of changes in future chapters. #RealRevision |
@christophonlyrx: I did an Outline and Character Bios & self notes with the brutal truth on the last draft. It hurt but it was #RealRevision |
@malindalo: @KateMessner I love revision! It’s my fave part of writing process. I use Scrivener now and it really helps me see big picture #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @MelanieMeehan1 I write 1st draft & make a list of “known issues” – then revise & share 2nd or 3rd draft w/ critique group. #RealRevision |
@yabookbridges: @mardieteach I let my kids do everything on 1 “draft”. Double space first time. Revision in 1 color; editing in another. #realrevision |
@DaniYve: RT @marcieaf: #realrevisionI send it to my kindle and then see what parts don’t read like a real book. |
@marcieaf: @malindalo I have found scrivener cork board feature helpful in reoutlining during revision-allows for color coding elements #realrevision |
@yaytime: . @KateMessner I hate revisions going in…but love them when I get to the other side. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: . @AStarowicz’s Revision cart has sticky notes,pencils,highlighters (many colors),colored pencils,index cards,revising phones #RealRevision |
@malindalo: @marcieaf Definitely! I re-outline a few times throughout revising process. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: @ScottMiddlemiss Tell them before their 1st draft HOW they’ll be revising later – helps so much. And make the 1st one fast. #RealRevision |
@mardieteach: RT @KateMessner: Tell them before their 1st draft HOW theyll be revising later – helps so much. And make the 1st one fast. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: RT @yaytime: I hate revisions going in…but love them when I get to the other side. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @yaytime Curious…what does the revision process look like with graphic novels vs. a regular text manuscript? #RealRevision |
@thereadingzone: @KateMessner We were talking about “how book are born” and they had NO IDEA how much revision happens. It was great to share! #RealRevision |
@yabookbridges: @mardieteach Yes. Also talk abt no need to fix little things like commas & spelling if not sure it will be in final. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: I am having trouble concentrating on the rest of the chat now because I need to know about @AStarowicz’s magic phones… #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: @KateMessner Me too! It’s amazing to find the diamond in the rough at the end of journey. #RealRevision |
@LynneKelly: @MojoFingers Oh, cool! I used to have a couple of “phones” made w/PVC pipe for kids who needed to hear their writing out loud. #realrevision |
@debralynnlazar: I’ll also revise a few chapters, then read through them again before moving on. #RealRevision |
@TracyShawn: #RealRevision=Patience, time, determination–and a boatload of coffee. |
@MelanieMeehan1: @katemessner do you know what’s going to happen in your stories when you start or is the surprise part of revision process? #realrevision |
@KateMessner: Reading a piece aloud has always been the first thing on my revision checklist – as writer and as teacher. #RealRevision |
@yaytime: @KateMessner Revisions are rough with graphic novels, especially if writing & drawing at the same time (as many of us do). #RealRevision |
@MelanieMeehan1: RT @KateMessner: Reading a piece aloud has always been the first thing on my revision checklist – as writer and as teacher. #RealRevision |
@codejill: RT @KateMessner: Reading a piece aloud has always been the first thing on my revision checklist – as writer and as teacher. #RealRevision |
@gaepol: @KateMessner I am constantly reading aloud. I find it helpful to have to read aloud to someone. #paythekids #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: @MelanieMeehan1 Yes. My biggest revision issues get talked over w/ my friend Linda once a month over good coffee. #RealRevision |
@ixtumea: RT @KateMessner: Reading a piece aloud has always been the first thing on my revision checklist – as writer and as teacher. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: Reading aloud is the best way to learn if you wrote what you meant to write. Also lets you know if it’s all stumbly & awkward. #RealRevision |
@ScottMiddlemiss: @KateMessner Like the read-aloud strategy. Whisper phone is good for start; trusted peer partner as listener even better??? #realrevision |
@marcieaf: @KrisBisBooks Thx for link! I’m buying some of these and they can be thrown in dishwasher=brilliant! #realrevision |
@KateMessner: Huge paper makes me happy about revising (timelines, maps, charts, etc) Interesting supplies can help student motivation, too. #RealRevision |
@MelanieMeehan1: @katemessner authentic vs not authentic with my critical friend has been REALLY helpful for me as I’ve been drafting. #realrevision |
@aruddteacher100: #RealRevisionwhen writing with students do you have them skip lines write on one side only? They can cut apart and rearrange |
@KrisBisBooks: @marcieaf I have a bunch of these in my classroom for reading instruction, and the kids <3 to use them! #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: I always have to rewrite 1st pages to get the right beginning. Kids can try “two new 1st paragraphs” to experiment w/ leads. #RealRevision |
@goraina: @KateMessner Revising a graphic novel script, written in thumbnails, requires a LOT of erasing. #RealRevision |
@stefwass: RT @KateMessner: Reading a piece aloud has always been the first thing on my revision checklist – as writer and as teacher. #RealRevision |
@Amy_LovesYA: RT: @MelanieMeehan1 I write my 1st drafts like I’m being pursued by a speeding train. When I finish I relax & start revising. #RealRevision |
@AStarowicz: #RealRevisionMost difficult thing about classroom revision-half of class on 1st draft and half of the class on revising-tough 2 keep flow! |
@Jess_Keating: @KateMessner I always find that my ‘real’ beginning actually starts a few pages after I *think* it does! 😉 #realrevisionChop, chop! |
@yabookbridges: @KateMessner Peer response feature w turnitin is good for HS. Anonymous & teacher sets Likert-type ?s to narrow focus. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: Umm… our revision chat is trending right now. I might be swooning a little bit. #RevisionManiac #RealRevision |
@AStarowicz: @KateMessner I love the kids reaction when they like the second one better – hooked them to new strategy:) #RealRevision |
@mardieteach: @aruddteacher100 My problem with students writing on looseleaf is they lose the leaves! We use notebooks. Double-space. #RealRevision |
@marcieaf: @MelanieMeehan1 I have kids also read aloud each other’s work. Partner reads what’s really there. Kids hear mistakes better. #realrevision |
@KateMessner: @ixtumea Depends on the book – but usually it takes me at least 3-4 times to get the beginning right. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: My online critique group offers feedback using MS Word comments. This is a great strategy for students, too! #RealRevision |

@AbbyRobles13: @colbysharp Revision stresses out 2nd graders who hand write stories. They understand the changes but not the effort to do it. #RealRevision |
@KateMessner: Often, I find that free-writing away from my manuscript really helps me see big-picture revision issues. #RealRevision |
@AbbyRobles13: RT @KateMessner: Reading a piece aloud has always been the first thing on my revision checklist – as writer and as teacher. #RealRevision |
@SheskeyS: Students peer conf and give each other “Stars and Wishes” What did they like? What did they wish the author would do. #realrevision |
@gaepol: @KateMessner I’ve learned (sort of) that the start of a new revision feels hopeless. I panic, I suck. Then I hit a stride. #RealRevision |
@marcieaf: @SheskeyS Yes! Love this. I also have kids ask questions of the writer. What do you want to know more about? #realrevision |
@lorilovesbooks: Writing 4 me is like playing with playdough; pinch, pull, move, and add words until I can say,”Yep, that’s what I was after.” #RealRevision |

@marcieaf: @KateMessner Writing off draft=huge help! Helps me know I don’t have to “mess up” my mss. #realrevision |
@ScottMiddlemiss: @KateMessner When they figure out they don’t have to give away whole story in first three sentences, see lightbulb go off! #realrevision |
